Rubber Components for the MOSE Project in Venice

ILPEA was selected to join a limited group of companies participating in one of the most significant projects in Veneto, dedicated to protecting Venice’s unique beauty from high tides. As part of this project, ILPEA supplied large rubber elements, including V-shaped fenders used to prevent the platform from contacting the seabed, as well as both front and back seals essential to the system’s watertight performance.

To ensure the success of the project, our components had to meet strict technical requirements related to contact stress, reaction forces, energy absorption, vertical deflection stiffness, and tight dimensional tolerances. In order to fully satisfy these specifications, twelve different profile shapes were analyzed. Non-linear FEM analysis was employed to optimize the design and performance of the components.

The production of these large-scale rubber seals for the yellow barriers, those that rise during high tide events, was preceded by extensive engineering and structural calculations, carried out in collaboration with the University of Udine. This combination of advanced design methods, rigorous testing, and specialized manufacturing ensured that ILPEA’s components met the demanding standards of one of Italy’s most important protective infrastructures.
